I’m judgy. I know that I’m sort of supposed to be if I’m building a blog around reviews, but I’m slowly learning in Atlanta that “don’t judge a book by its cover” is the golden rule to live by down here.

I ventured over to Tin Roof Cantina to cash in on a Scoutmob deal (50% off) because why not? I had passed the place a few times, didn’t like that it was sort of hidden off the road and next to a Chic-fil-A. I’m always hesitant of people that serve Tex-Mex because most Tex-Mex is pretty crappy.

The highest of fives to Tin Roof Cantina to not only killing it with the service (my waitress was wonderful) but also surprising me on the food!

I ordered the Tin Roof Margarita ($5.50) the Classico Taco ($3.25) which is your choice of meat on a flour tortilla topped with cilantro, onion and lime…and a small order (5 wings) of the Giancarlo Style wings. That’s just the house style which is a “secret ingredient” sauce that includes buffalo sauce, cilantro, garlic and onion.

The tacos are served a la carte, but that is forgiven due to their size. I loathe the wee tacos you sometimes get…this was the perfect medium size. The chicken was flavorful and moist and there’s something I love about keeping it simple. You don’t need any more than cilantro, onion and lime on your taco!

The wings were tasty – definitely spicy but definitely had a ton more flavor than your normal buffalo sauce. It was also a much thicker sauce, which is always a welcome change from that runny tabasco sauce some smother their wings in.

I checked out their website and it looks like Tin Roof has trivia nights on Tuesday and Thursday’s and live music most nights starting around 10ish. I appreciate the fact that just because they’re open late, they don’t skimp on the food. Often times venues that are open late serve you crappy food because they can. Where else would you go? +5 life points to Tin Roof for not taking the easy way out.

I’ll definitely be back for a pitcher of beer and more wings.

I lived in Los Angeles for 6 months, right in the heart of Hollywood.

If you want my opinion on LA as a whole, you’ll need to buy me a drink and set aside a couple hours.

Hollywood Blvd. itself is pretty horrendous. It’s filled with tourist trap after tourist trap, costume shops, sex shops, Starbucks and awful bars that get you in with their 2 for 1 drink specials and scare you off with their terrible frozen food from boxes.

But nothing I say will ever stop a tourist from going to check it out for themselves. So if you do, please go to Calle Tacos for lunch. It’s an oasis in a sea of mediocre/overpriced bars and restaurants.

Their menu? Reasonably priced.
Their staff? Extremely friendly. All. The. Time. (So rare in LA)
Portions? Insane.
Food? Fresh! I can’t speak to how authentic it is, but I never ate a piece of chicken and thought “what was that, rubber?”

This is what they have to say about their cooking methods on their website:

We don’t use any trans fats, only soybean oil. The Al Pastor is marinated in achiote, a spice that gives the pork rich flavors and color. We buy our meat fresh daily from local farmers. We also make our Horchata (sweet rice water) from scratch and our Jamaica (Hibiscus water) is organic and healthy. The flavors of Mexico have been passed down from generation to generation gaining perfection every step of the way.

This place became a haven for me. I could get reliable food from smiling employees right outside my apartment at pretty much any time during the day or night.

I wouldn’t endorse too many places right outside of my old apartment in Hollywood, but I full heartedly implore you to stop for a taco or torta at Calle Tacos!
